Jones Laps Field in Trenton Victory
TRENTON, N.J.- Having decided that he likes to drive a race car in a prone position, Parnelli Jones dominated the Trenton 200-miler and took his second straight USAC National Championship victory in the Agajanian Bowes-Seal-Fast Chapman Lotus-Ford. After setting a lap record (31.54 seconds; 114.40 mph), Parnelli lapped everybody, though a new yellow flag rule permitted some of his rivals to catch up following several minor spills. At one point A.J. Foyt actually nosed his old front engine roadster into the lead and the two pros put on a great two-lap duel. But Parnelli took over again and A.J. blew his engine shortly thereafter. Don Branson and Bud Tingelstad finished second and third in roadsters, ahead of Rodger Ward in the Watson-Ford. Jim Clark ran sixth before retiring.
