Brazilian Carlos Pace never gave up hope with the notoriously unreliable Alfa Romeo-engined Brabhams. Indeed, he finished the season enthusing over the potential that new versions of these machines offer for 1977. During the brief, tantalising periods when the Brabham-Alfa managed to display its true possibilities, Pace proved that he has lost none of his undoubted skill.
Pace is just one of several top-class drivers let down by their machinery during 1976. But, of all of them, he probably has a longer list beginning "if only." If only his car maintained its early practice pace at Paul Ricard; if only it hadn't failed so early at Monza. .........
