NART LE MANS FERRARI P2

Italy

NOT EVERYONE is convinced that the chopped-off tail is the ultimate in aerodynamics for sports prototypes, especially at Le Mans where maximum speed is all important and maneuverability is of lesser concern. This Drogo-modified Ferrari 365 P2, entered by North American Racing Team for Bob Bondurant and Masten Gregory, sported a tail 2 ft longer than normal, with vertical stabilizing fins. Visible in the rear view are the holes in the fins for alternate positioning of a Chaparral-style variable spoiler, not used in the race. The Ferrari was less fortunate than the similarly inspired Alpines and Porsche Carrera Sixes. It ran among the top 10 in this year's very fast field, but Ferrari gremlins were working overtime, and gearbox trouble caused its retirement after 7.5 hours.
